SUMMARY:Große Messe - Collegium vocale Gent (Salzburg)
DESCRIPTION:Felix Mendelssohn [1809-1847]\nChoral “Mitten wir im Leben sind” for eight-part choir op. 23 No 3 \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart [1756-1791]\nMissa in c K.427 “Grosse Messe” \nMari Eriksmoen soprano\nEva Zaïcik mezzo-soprano\nDavid Fischer tenor\nMikhail Timoshenko bass \nCollegium Vocale Gent choir\nCamerata Salzburg orchestra\nPhilippe Herreweghe conductor \nIn 1782 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart married Constanze Weber without first obtaining the approval of his father Leopold. At that time he had been living in Vienna for some time as a composer and keyboard virtuoso. Wolfgang hoped to regain his father’s favour by promising to write a Mass for the archbishop of Salzburg. The orchestral and vocal forces and the proportions of this Grosse Messe in C minor K.427 would have undoubtedly resulted in a monumental missa solemnis\, but sadly it remained unfinished. Still\, this is Mozart at his best: full of masterly bravura\, carefree elegance and emotional depth.

SUMMARY:Die Schöpfung - Collegium vocale Gent (Amsterdam)
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Haydn [1732–1809]\, Die Schöpfung Hob.XXI:2 \nRobin Johansen soprano\nWerner Güra tenor\nFlorian Boesch bass \nCollegium Vocale Gent choir\nKoninklijk Concertgebouworkest orchestra\nPhilippe Herreweghe conductor \nJoseph Haydn had never been completely aware of just what an astonishing effect vernacular oratorios could have on audiences. After seeing several performances of Handel’s Messiah in London\, he changed his mind completely\, apparently having been deeply moved. Awestruck\, he started to write his first oratorio\, already past the age of sixty. Haydn pulled out all the stops for Die Schöpfung (The Creation)\, and surpassed himself as an independent and self-aware artist. The official premiere was on 19 March 1799 in Vienna’s Burgtheater\, and its success was nothing less than wild!
