DESCRIPTION:James Wood: Apokalypsis\n(World premiere with Collegium Vocale Gent)\nIn the new\, full-evening work by the British composer and conductor James Wood\, the theme of the end of days plays a central role. Ironically enough\, it was a pandemic that got in the way of the first performance. Three years later\, this magnum opus by Wood\, commissioned by Collegium Vocale Gent\, can finally be christened. Apokalypsis borrows its texts from the Bible book in which St John describes in a vision how seven angels with their trumpets predict seven catastrophes. In contrast\, Wood places a variety of contemporary poems\, blogs\, reports and political speeches from Napoleon to Donald Trump. In light of the geopolitical developments in recent years\, Apokalypsis continues to be a highly topical piece. \nThe seven trumpets are rendered by the saxophones of BL!NDMAN. Alleskunner James Wood presenteert een grootschalig oratorium\, waarin hij een parallel trekt tussen de aaneenschakeling van rampen in onze tijd en het laatste Bijbelboek\, de Openbaring van Johannes. Apokalypsis voor koor\, saxofoonseptet\, orgel en rondom opgestelde luidsprekers belooft een verpletterende ervaring te worden. Wood combineert de Latijnse tekst met hedendaagse poëzie\, blogs en nieuwsberichten. De topzangers van Collegium Vocale Gent – vaste gasten in het Muziekgebouw – vertolken in zeven delen de voorspellingen van de zeven engelen. \n‘De gelijkenissen kunnen niemand ontgaan’\, zegt Wood\, ‘maar pogingen om de ultieme catastrofe af te wenden worden voortdurend ondergraven door bureaucratische onmacht én politieke onwil’. Wood – behalve componist ook meesterslagwerker en dirigent – heeft zich uitgebreid verdiept in antieke muziekculturen. De afwisseling van koor\, recitatief en solo’s doet denken aan de passies van Johann Sebastian Bach\, maar Wood gebruikt in Apokalypsis een zeer divers palet. De zeven bazuinen van de Apocalyps vertaalt hij naar de zeven saxofonisten van ensemble BL!NDMAN [sax]\, die onder meer de Tubax (een imposante contrabassaxofoon) zullen bespelen. \nQuelle: muziekgebouw.nl \n
