SUMMARY:In Napoleon’s footsteps – Collegium vocale Gent (Paris)
DESCRIPTION:Ludwig van Beethoven [1770-1828]\n\n\n\n\nThird symphony op.55 ‘Eroica’\n\n\n\n\nLuigi Cherubini [1760-1842]\nRequiem in C minor \nCollegium Vocale Gent choir\nOrchestre des Champs Elysées orchestra\nMaria van Nieukerken choir master\nPhilippe Herreweghe conductor \nLuigi Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor from 1816\, composed in memory of the executed King Louis XVI\, is considered one of his most moving works. Scored without soloists but with strikingly dark orchestration\, Cherubini creates a restrained\, solemn atmosphere that deeply impressed contemporaries such as Beethoven and Schumann. This masterful requiem\, in which classical form and emotional intensity converge\, is paired with Beethoven’s revolutionary Third Symphony – originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte\, whom Beethoven first saw as a symbol of liberty and heroism\, but later rejected in disillusionment after Napoleon crowned himself emperor. The result is a fascinating confrontation between mourning for the old regime and the heroism of a new era – a musical reflection on Napoleon’s complex legacy.\nSource: wwww.collegiumvocale.com

SUMMARY:Weihnachts-Oratorium – Collegium vocale Gent (Baden-Baden)
DESCRIPTION:Johann Sebastian Bach [1685–1750] \nWeihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248\n[Cantata I\, II\, III & VI] \nJulia Lezhneva soprano\nOlivia Vermeulen alto\nJulian Pregardien tenor\nHanno Müller-Brachmann bass \nCollegium Vocale Gent choir\nBudapest festival Orchestra orchestra\nIván Fischer conductor \nNo matter how lovely they are\, none of Bach’s other Christmas cantatas can hope to compete with the popularity of the Christmas Oratorio written in 1734-35. The reason is obvious: its six cantatas make the oratorio an exceedingly strong musical and conceptual unity. Bach skilfully and pragmatically reworked some of his earlier secular choruses and arias\, written for birthday cantatas for the Saxon royal family\, creating music in honour of the birth of Christ. In this way he not only saved time\, he also gave these splendid compositions a new lease on life. \nSource: https://www.collegiumvocale.com/en/concert/weihnachts-oratorium-31/
