Scored without soloists but with strikingly dark orchestration\, Cherubini creates a restrained\, solemn atmosphere that deeply impressed contemporaries such as Beethoven and Schumann. This masterful requiem\, in which classical form and emotional intensity converge\, is paired with Beethoven’s revolutionary Third Symphony – originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte\, whom Beethoven first saw as a symbol of liberty and heroism\, but later rejected in disillusionment after Napoleon crowned himself emperor. Im Dialog damit: der eigens für das Duo Amaris geschriebene Liedzyklus „Tell them“ (2023) des brasilianischen Komponisten João Luiz auf Texte der marshallischen Dichterin Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner. The reason is obvious: its six cantatas make the oratorio an exceedingly strong musical and conceptual unity. Bach skilfully and pragmatically reworked some of his earlier secular choruses and arias\, written for birthday cantatas for the Saxon royal family\, creating music in honour of the birth of Christ.
